14-SAN ANTONIO, TX-Part 2

While cruising around San Antonio, we went down to what is called, The King William District.

This was interesting because this area is full of historic homes that are actually beautiful mansions. Always fun to see these places.

Thanks to our friends, Bill and Teri Smith, we met a wonderful couple, Paul and Lori De Luna. Paul is an amazing artist as well as a vocalist. He has a studio next to his house. Paul has the ability to put tremendous emotion into his artwork.  This picture is taken in his studio and the picture at his left is a work in process.

After seeing his work, we commissioned him to do a charcoal drawing of Nicodemus as he lifts Christ off the cross. This is part of the Nicodemus monologue that Don performs. You can see some of his work at his web site, reflectionsoftheson.com.

Paul came over to Bill’s garage to do some photography to aid him in making his drawing.

Paul used Don as Nicodemus and his son, Nathan, to stand in for the figure of Christ. The finished drawing should be done in a month or two. We are very excited to see the finished product.

Paul and Lori have four children. The two girls came mostly to play with Barney, Bill and Teri’s puppy.

Bill and Paul are both very talented musically. We enjoyed listening to Bill play the piano and the both of them sing. Their music was wonderful. We teased them about hogging all the talent since Don and I can neither play or sing.

The photography was taking place in the garage next to his ‘32 Ford truck. Don decided to play a trick on Bill. He put two decal “bullet holes” in the back of the truck two days earlier. Bill walked past it several times and never saw them.  Finally, Teri and Lori saw them and pointed then out to Bill. Of course he immediately knew who the culprit was.

On another day we went to Fredericksburg, Texas. We stopped by the Grape Creek Winery for lunch. There were lots of people there, possibly because it was not only Saturday, but the first warm day in about a week.

There was a trailer there that sold very tasty crepes, so we sat in the sunshine and enjoyed lunch. There was a musician singing and playing, making it a nice stop.

The next winery that Bill stopped at is Alexander Winery. The tasting room is in a modular trailer.

The sign in front is worth the stop…It says, “Our tasting room may suck…but our wines sure don’t!”

There are a lot of amazing art galleries in Fredericksburg.

This one had the same fountain in the courtyard as we had seen at the Southwest School of Arts and Craft. There was also a large statue of Ronald Reagan and an amazing amount of beautiful art inside.

The next stop was strictly for Don and Bill. They stopped in to look at what they told me was “metal art.”

Teri and I stayed in the car. We had seen enough of this type of “metal art.” We let the boys have fun on their own. After all, we had stopped at some galleries and gift shops downtown that were of way more interest to us.

Late that afternoon we went to a live theater in Fredericksburg, called the RockBox. It was a show put on by four professional performers. They were singers and dancers and also four musicians. It was called Pure Platinum…or in other words, Rock and Roll…songs we actually knew and could understand the words.  WHAT A CONCEPT!!!  It was not the usual music of today.

It was a super high-energy show. We were there for the 4:30 show and they did another one at 8pm. Makes me tired just to think of doing all of that…but they are all young. Makes a huge difference.

They sang the songs and impersonated all the popular singers of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. These are the Blues Brothers in the above picture. We followed it up by dinner at a great little German restaurant in Fredericksburg, a mostly German community. It was a really fun evening.

We told Bill and Teri goodbye for probably another year and now are headed out of Texas to an interesting part of New Mexico. We will be in Ruidoso, NM next and then on to Silver City.

Stay tuned for more fun things to come.
